RESEARCH AREA AND MAIN RESEARCH INTERESTS/TOPICS

The Institute of Paediatrics of Southern Switzerland (IPSI) dedicated research unit is included in SwissPedNet, a Swiss based network that promotes paediatric clinical research in Switzerland.

IPSI promotes and supports paediatric research projects in Ticino by maintaining collaboration with other Swiss university centers within the SwissPedNet and specialty specific networks, such as the Swiss Paediatric Oncology Group (SPOG), and international research consortia.

Through research, we aim to improve the quality of care for children and thus the quality of life of paediatric patients and their families, for example by helping to expand knowledge not only on diseases and their treatments but also on everyday aspects of life and disease prevention.

IPSI covers the following paediatric research areas: general paediatrics including paediatric emergency medicine, oncology, cardiology and nephrology, paediatric infectious diseases, neuropaediatrics, onco-hematology, rheumatology and paediatric surgery.

IPSI participates in several clinical trials and registries, most of them based on a multicentre setting. Around 40 studies per year are ongoing in paediatric oncology alone.

RESEARCH METHODS

Our research team and the fruitful collaboration with CTU EOC, USI, and SUPSI, allows IPSI to conduct and participate in various research projects while maintaining high quality and adherence to local SOPs, Good Clinical Practice and Human Research Act, national and international guidelines. The IPSI paediatric research unit is committed to promote, encourage and facilitate high quality research for children and their families, to include their view on meaningful outcomes, to implement scientific evidence in clinical practice and to empower the next generation of researchers in the field of paediatrics.
